MESSAGE TO PARENTS Boxing Safety
Please first of all understand that your child is not required to spar or become a competitive athlete in order to participate in our program. He or she can come to our facility for recreational purposes only if that is what they choose. For those who wish to compete or spar we must point out that amateur boxing, unlike professional boxing, is a highly regulated sport that requires participants to wear various protective equipment such as headgear, mouthpiece, hand wraps, and foul protector. As a result, amateur boxing has fewer injuries or strains than high school football, soccer, gymnastics, roller blading, and several other popular activities. Conclusive studies from major universities and prominent medical organizations worldwide have shown that there are no long term effects related to amateur boxing, such as dementia pugilistica (punch drunkenness), or impairments to memory or gross motor function. Please refer to the boxing safety/faq’s page for more details. In order to ensure the safety and well being of all program participants, we at Peninsula Boxing & Fitness have a safety first policy, which means that all programs and training activities are conducted in accordance with set organizational safety standards and regulations. Furthermore, we require that all coaches at our facility are USA Boxing certified. To maintain certification status, coaches are required to attend instructional safety clinics on an ongoing basis, as well as well as be certified in basic first aid and CPR.
Program Benefits
Our program is designed to meet the immediate needs of your child through boxing. Whether your child lacks confidence, exhibits low self esteem, is overweight, is out of shape, demonstrates aggressive or antisocial behavior, or just needs a place to call home for a while, we have a facility and coaching staff to support and encourage your child. Boxing, unlike any other sport, is the most effective at building character through strength and confidence. Our highly disciplined program increases mental fortitude, and develops in young people the self respect and courage necessary to avoid giving in to the peer pressures of joining gangs, experimenting with drugs and alcohol, or becoming involved in antisocial activities. Furthermore, success in boxing is inconsistent with smoking, drinking, taking drugs, or eating poorly so your child will tend to live more health consciously. Your child may perform better academically as a result of a more disciplined lifestyle acquired through the rigors of a structured boxing program. Boxing teaches spatial awareness and increases perception so that students learn to analyze a situation before making decisions. He or she will come to understand that there is more than one way to achieve a goal, and that life is about choices in which better choices lead to better results for each individual and those around them. Our dedicated staff of coaches provide constant supervision and are on hand to ensure that the environment we provide is not only safe, but also fun and exciting. This is important because if our program is fun, and/or inspirational, young people will want to be involved. It is through regular participation that your child is more likely to develop his/her full potential as a human being.
It is our job as coaches and mentors to point out that the skills learned and the process by which those skills are attained are connected to life in several ways. Poise, patience, discipline, motivation, desire, commitment, effort, all of the program qualities imparted on your child in the gym, are many of the same characteristics necessary for him/her to become successful outside of the gym. Boxing teaches youngsters to understand that to become proficient or reach the highest skill level attainable, you must have the discipline and patience to learn, the dedication and motivation to persist, and the courage to not be afraid of failure. Boxing teaches your child to prepare properly, to take calculated steps and make adjustments when necessary. Your child will understand that mistakes have consequences, but that mistakes can be corrected and overcome by applying oneself mentally. It is through the learning process that one is able to solve problems by providing an intelligent response whether in gym or in the game of life. It is our hope that parents help to reinforce some of the ideals we teach so that young men and women embrace them and become more accountable to themselves, to family members, and those concerned.
Through boxing we hope to cultivate an enthusiasm for life, as well as provide an atmosphere to relieve the stress from it. Our goal is not necessarily to build a great boxer but rather to give guidance and inspiration so as to build a great human being and productive citizen.
