Amateur Boxing Program

Structured curriculum instills discipline, improves fitness, builds confidence.

Our amateur boxing program is conducted in cooperation with, and under the auspices of USA Boxing Inc., the organizational body which oversees all amateur boxing in the United States. USA Boxing is itself a non profit organization and a member of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), which represents athletes from a variety of sports on a national level. Amateur boxing in the United States is a highly regulated sport and conclusive studies by prominent universities and medical organizations have found amateur boxing to be safer and result in less injuries than highschool football, gymnastics, soccer, roller blading, as well as many other such activities. Please note that sparring and/or competition is not a program requirement nor does it bar anyone from program participation. Competitive athletes are often involved in local boxing club events on weekends, as well as participate in Police Activities League, Silver and Golden Gloves Association sponsored competitions or tournaments, and other events held throughout California and the rest of the United States. Our after school program is conducted Monday-Wednesday from 4-6:30pm, Friday from 5-7pm, and Saturday from 9am-12pm for youth and young adults from the ages of 8-34. USA Boxing junior division training is for youngsters 8-16 years of age at $35 monthly membership, while senior division training is for young adults who range in age from 17-34 years at $45 monthly membership. Peninsula Boxing & Fitness will either provide you with necessary training gloves and protective hand wraps, or guide you in purchasing new equipment through online distributors of professional quality items which we highly suggest, as opposed to buying merchandise from local sporting goods stores which generally carry inferior quality equipment that will expose individuals to risk of injury. Other necessary items for competitive athletes such as competition head gear, apparel, and/or shoes must be purchased direct from the manufacturer as well. Our coaching staff will guide athlete’s in the process of making selections. Registration, training, and/or equipment fee’s are waived for individuals who qualify.

Class Description

Program participants upon arrival at the gym start with circuit training or small group practice sessions. There are activity stations set up for students to perform a variety of tasks. Station 1 consists of warmup activities and stretching exercises. Station 2 features line drills, mirror exercises, and shadowboxing routines. Station 3 involves one on one punch mitt work with coaches, heavy and/or light bag work, counter punch drills, and sparring (optional). Station 4 consists of strength and conditioning exercises. Station 5 is advanced flexibility training and cool down exercises. As part of basic level training students begin by doing varied warm up activities such as jumping rope, performing dumbbell, medicine ball, or various calisthenic exercises for the first 10-15 minutes. This is followed with approximately 10 minutes of light flexibility and stretching exercises. Participants then work on basic fundamentals to include stance, directional footwork, and striking technique after which they learn to perform line drills and/or shadow box combining striking technique, head movement, and footwork to develop balance in motion. Once line drill exercises and shadow boxing ability becomes proficient, students then transfer learned skills to light and heavy bags for a super cardio total body conditioning workout. With an emphasis on speed and power, heavy bag workouts build strength and stamina, teaching students how to put weight and leverage into their striking technique. Light bags, such as air filled speed bags and double end bags teach students how to cultivate timing and rhythm, while developing focus and increasing striking accuracy.

Once athletes become familiar with a beginning level workout routine they are then introduced to interval training, which consists of high level activity output followed by moderately paced activities to combine boxing skills with core specific stability training exercises in an effort to develop breathing patterns, as well as achieve the ultimate in strength and stamina. To further sharpen skills, increase energy levels, and develop hand, eye, and foot coordination, the use of punch mitt and punch shield floor workout routines are employed where students work one on one with coaches in order to become well rounded athletes. Upon being able to execute skills on the punch pads, participants proceed to counter punch drills where they are paired with a partner in order to learn and execute offensive and defensive maneuvers and reactions with each other in predetermined choreographed sequences. These drills are supervised and require necessary protective equipment. Once proficient at counterpunch drills, club members who choose may at this time enter the ring for sparring purposes, which is optional, if they are properly registered athletes with USA Boxing. Athletes must be registered with USA Boxing for sparring or competitive purposes as this provides medical insurance coverage for any injuries that may occur during supervised training or sanctioned competitions. To conclude practice sessions, we incorporate sports specific calisthenic and plyometric strength and conditioning exercises followed by cool down and advanced flexibility to increase range of motion and promote injury prevention.

Amateur Program Benefits

Our program directly engages participants both mentally and physically within a well structured curriculum that instills discipline, increases cardiovascular fitness, promotes weight loss, builds confidence and self-esteem, enhances problem solving skills, and helps to promote a more healthy lifestyle as success in boxing is inconsistent with smoking, drinking, taking drugs, or eating poorly. By providing a dynamic program that consists of fun and exciting activities, we offer at risk youth and young adults an alternative to running the streets, joining gangs, or experimenting with drugs or alcohol. Our program helps develop strong moral character so individuals come to possess the courage and strength to make better decisions in life. Our coaching staff is on hand to encourage youth in a positive manner and constructively occupy their time with a boxing program that teaches club members the ultimate in sportsmanship and respectful conduct amongst program participants, as well as respectful conduct towards others in general. From regular participation in our program and the solid work ethic attained, young people come to recognize and understand that the boxing skills they acquire in the gym are the very same skills that when applied in everyday situations become life lessons. They also learn that success in life is not something that happens overnight or is given to you, but something you must work towards with passion and inspiration.
