Recreational Boxing & Fitness

Fun, high intensity classes to challenge you both physically and mentally.

Our recreational boxing programs are perfect for the general public. We offer non contact boxing fitness and conditioning classes for men, women, and children ages 8 years and up. Peninsula Boxing & Fitness will either provide you with necessary training gloves and protective hand wraps, or guide you in purchasing new equipment through online distributors of professional quality items which we highly suggest, as opposed to buying merchandise from local sporting goods stores which generally carry inferior quality equipment that will expose individuals to risk of injury. All persons interested in our boxing fitness classes are allowed 1 free trial class to gauge interest.

Class Description

Our high intensity classes physically and mentally challenge individuals in a fun and exiting way combining music, movement, and motivation in order that students reach their full potential while having a fun and enjoyable experience. Students are first motivated and pumped up with some of the latest sounds from our boom box system. We then proceed with varied warm up activities ranging from rope jumping and calisthenic exercises, to activities with dumbbells or medicine balls, followed by light flexibility. Students are then taught basic stance, footwork, and striking technique in order to maximize workout potential. Class participants then go right to the heavy bags learning proper range and distance to make room for dynamic and explosive punch and kick combinations with an emphasis placed on speed and power for a super cardio total body conditioning workout.

During a nonstop heavy bag workout routine that lasts from 30-40 minutes, instructors intermix various conditioning exercises (interval training) to build lung capacity and develop breathing patterns, as well as maintain an increased heart rate to promote a high calorie burn. Partner drills are taught and employed from time to time to enable students to use body and head movement to land punches as well as avoid them, striking at your partners gloves only which are used as targets (non contact). Skills are further sharpened and stamina increased with the use of punch mitt and punch shield floor workout routines with partners or coaches. Various calisthenic and plyometric strength and conditioning exercises are performed with an emphasis on core stability utilizing various gym equipment from strength bands to medicine balls and more. Classes conclude with cool down and advanced flexibility to increase range of motion and promote injury prevention.

Personal Training Description

Personal training or small group training reinforces and goes more in depth into the boxing technique of champions past and present, so as to help maximize your workout efforts beyond what the general boxing fitness classes offer. Working one on one with coaches, learn to fight from a crouch or semi crouch position or stance, enabling you to absorb more resistance and drive with tremendous force from the floor using leg strength. Learn to rotate fully and maximize range of motion in conjunction with striking technique that starts from the ground up putting hip, abdominal, and shoulder momentum into punches while transferring weight to increase leverage and power. Learn to impact targets fully, further maximizing power while avoiding hand injuries by improving focus, learning to spot targets with rapid eye movement, as well as comprehending proper range and distance so as to make room for dynamic striking, boxing from the outside, as well as slugging on the inside. Develop advanced foot work moving in and out of range while maintaining proper punching position and body alignment at all times to promote speed, readiness, and increase work rate. Learn to chain combinations together to create more rhythm and flow, as well as reduce wasted motion. Learn defensive reaction and counterpunching technique transferring your weight (rolling with the punches) to avoid blows, while landing your own blows, transitioning from offense to defense in fractions of a second. Learn to fight from left handed as well as right handed stances to promote shifting technique, balanced muscle development, and prevent overuse injuries while developing awesome coordination. Learn to interact with various training equipment on an advanced level whether on punch mitts with coaches, or on light and or heavy bags on your own. Finally you will become familiar with more potent boxing specific strength and conditioning exercises and drills that focus on core or power center stability, hand and neck strength, as well as leg strength and development of other extremities.
